Hello Tech Camp Teachers! Today you will blog a reflection on the video that you just watched. The post should be between 2-3 sentences. After you write your post, please be sure to comment on one other teachers post.
I am going to be honest...I was so impressed that I used this in 2010 (and I didn't remember) that I was reading my blogs from then and not paying attention to the video. I am so sorry. May I have extra credit? ; )
The video was short and simple. The presenter made one statement that stood out to me, students that are in poverty can change who they hang around. This statement made me think critically and I enjoyed it.
Yes they CAN change who they hang around with. My dad always told me, "lay down with dogs, wake up with fleas." Never really meant anything until I was older.
The things that stood out the most to me are: First, students may not "look or act" poor. Second, poverty isn't always a lack of finances, it's resources. Lastly, poverty is a lack of leadership in an area.
I had a student that was very sharp and performed well, but i sensed his desire to fit in, and that it was not socially acceptable. I praised his accomplishments privately, but praised the class publicly.

ReplyDeleteIt is often a break down of community. Neighbors don't know neighbors.
DeleteI have had students tell me, when I correct their grammar, that their parents got mad at them for being too smart.
ReplyDeleteThat makes me sad to hear. Now we teach our children to be "bilingual"
DeleteThis is sooooo very sad! =(

ReplyDeleteI agree Haley. Often there is a break down of community and they don't know their neighbors and don't have others to help them out.
